Plant Tissue Culture

Plant tissue culture is a technique by which cell/tissues selected from an elite plant is multiplied up to a desirable quantity with exactly the same characteristics of the selected elite mother plant. This process is carried out in a suitable culture medium under controlled laboratory conditions. The controlled laboratory conditions include temperature, light intensity, light duration and humidity etc. Though theoretically any plant can be propagated through tissue culture, fine tuning of media recipe and laboratory conditions are required for successful tissue culture propagation program.

Tissue culture or micro-propagation is having many stages, starting with selection of Elite mother plants, development of aseptic cultures through initiation, multiplication stage and finally the rooting stage. Thus, the fully formed miniature plants are now ready to shift out of lab for Primary Hardening or Initial acclimatization which is done in climate controlled Greenhouses and the final Secondary Hardening is done in shade houses where there is limited control of environmental conditions.
